XIAN Travel Tips
How to Get to Xi’an
1, Go to Xi’an By Flight
Xi’an is easily accessible by air via Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, with direct flights to major domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu (1.5–3 hours). International travelers can fly directly from Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, and Paris, or transfer through Beijing/Shanghai. The airport is well-connected to the city center via metro, shuttle buses, and taxis.
2, Go to Xi’an By Train
Xi’an is a key railway hub in northwest China. High-speed trains (G-series) connect it to Beijing (4.5 hours), Shanghai (6 hours), Guangzhou (8 hours), and Chengdu (3 hours) via Xi’an North Railway Station. Ordinary trains (Z/T/K-series) from Lanzhou (2.5 hours), Chongqing (5 hours), and Wuhan (4 hours) arrive at Xi’an Railway Station, which is closer to the city center.
When to Visit Xi’an
Xi’an is a year-round destination, with each season offering distinct charm. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most pleasant, with mild temperatures (10–25°C) ideal for exploring outdoor sites like the Terracotta Warriors and Ancient City Wall. Summer (June–August) can be hot, but early mornings and evenings are perfect for temple visits. Winter (November–March) is cold but less crowded, with snow adding a magical touch to historic landmarks.
Other Tips for Traveling to Xi’an
- Xi’an cuisine is flavorful but not overly spicy, with highlights like “yangrou paomo” (mutton soup with bread) and “roujiamo” (Chinese hamburger). Some local dishes use chili oil—ask for “less spicy” if preferred, especially in the Muslim Quarter.
- Respect cultural traditions: remove hats in temples, avoid touching artifacts, and dress modestly in the Muslim Quarter. Ask permission before taking photos of locals or religious ceremonies.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes, as exploring sites like the Ancient City Wall (13.7 km circumference) and Terracotta Warriors involves significant walking. Carry sunscreen, a hat, and water for sunny days.
- Major attractions get crowded during holidays. Book tickets online in advance (via official platforms) to skip lines. Arrive early (before 9:00 AM) at the Terracotta Warriors to avoid peak crowds.
- Use public transport for convenience: the metro covers most key spots, and ride-hailing apps (Didi) are reliable. Carry a translation app or note down addresses in Chinese to aid communication.
