Zhangjiajie Travel Guide

General Information

Zhangjiajie, located in the northwest of Hunan Province, is a city that has become globally renowned for its stunning natural scenery. It has a population of around 1.7 million and covers an area of 9,653 square kilometers. Administratively, it consists of 2 districts (Yongding and Wulingyuan) and 2 counties (Cili and Sangzhi). The local GDP in 2023 reached CNY 61.39 billion (USD 8.4 billion). The main ethnic groups here include Han, Tujia, Bai, and Miao, creating a rich and diverse cultural atmosphere. The city features a subtropical monsoon climate, which brings distinct seasons and beautiful sceneries throughout the year.

How to Get There

By Air

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is the main gateway for air travelers. It offers direct flights to numerous domestic destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Nanjing, Nanning, and Yinchuan. There are also some international flights available, though less frequent, such as to Taipei and Busan. The airport is only a 15 – minute drive from downtown Zhangjiajie and about 50 minutes from Wulingyuan Scenic Area, making it convenient for tourists to reach their accommodation or tourist spots.

By Train

Zhangjiajie has good train connections. There are train routes to cities like Guangzhou, Beijing, Zhanjiang, Changsha, and Wuxi. The high – speed trains can take you from Changsha to Zhangjiajie in approximately 3 hours. Once you arrive at the train station, which includes Zhangjiajie Railway Station and Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, it’s easy to find buses or taxis to transport you to the main attractions.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

As part of the larger Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the crown jewel of the region. It is famous for its thousands of towering sandstone pillars, some of which soar to heights of over 1,000 meters. The park spans 11,900 hectares and has several key areas worth exploring:
  • Yuanjiajie Scenic Area: Home to the iconic Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, this area offers breathtaking panoramic views. You can reach it via a 2 – hour hike or take a shuttle bus. The Bailong Elevator, the world’s tallest outdoor elevator, climbs 326 meters along the side of a cliff, providing a thrilling way to access the area.
  • Tianzi Mountain: Also known as the “monarch of the peak forest,” Tianzi Mountain offers some of the best sunrise views in Zhangjiajie. On clear days, the sea of clouds below creates an unforgettable and dreamy scene.
  • Golden Whip Stream: If you prefer a more relaxing activity, take a stroll along the Golden Whip Stream. This 7.5 – kilometer trail winds through the park, following a clear river and offering close – up views of the majestic peaks. Keep an eye out for the monkeys that inhabit the area.

Tianmen Mountain National Park

Tianmen Mountain is another must – visit attraction in Zhangjiajie:
  • The Glass Skywalk: A transparent walkway suspended 1,400 meters above the ground, the glass skywalk is 60 meters long. Walking on it gives you an adrenaline rush while presenting incredible views of the surrounding peaks.
  • The 99 – bend Road: This road is a remarkable feat of engineering, with 99 hairpin bends leading to Tianmen Cave. From there, 999 steps take you up to the natural rock arch, also known as “heaven’s gate.”
  • Cable Car Ride: The 7,455 – meter – long cable car ride is the longest in the world. It provides an awe – inspiring view of the entire mountain and its surroundings, allowing you to appreciate the grandeur of Tianmen Mountain from above.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is the longest and highest glass bridge of its kind globally. Spanning 430 meters across the canyon and suspended 300 meters above the ground, it offers breathtaking views of the canyon below. For thrill – seekers, the bridge also features a bungee – jumping platform. Note that the bridge can get crowded, especially during peak season, so it’s advisable to plan your visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for safety checks before entering.

Local Culture

Zhangjiajie has a rich cultural heritage. The three main ethnic minority groups – Tujia, Bai, and Miao, along with 29 other minority groups, live in harmony with the Han nationality. In 2006, folk songs of Sangzhi County, the hands – waving dance of the Tujia ethnic group, the Mao Gus dance, and the crafts of Tujia brocade were all included in the protection catalog of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. You can experience the unique folk – customs, clothing, decorations, dance, and music of these ethnic groups by visiting ethnic – style scenic spots such as Tujia Ethnic Garden. The local people are known for their hospitality, making visitors feel at home. And don’t forget to try the local snacks, which are sure to become your favorites.

Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (March to May): Spring is an ideal time to visit Zhangjiajie. The weather is mild, and the blooming flowers add a touch of charm to the landscape. April and May bring clearer skies and comfortable temperatures, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
  • Summer (June to August): Summer is the peak tourist season as the area is lush and green. However, expect larger crowds, especially during the school holidays in July and August. Although temperatures can be high, the higher altitudes and shaded trails in the parks offer a cooler retreat.
  • Autumn (September to November): Autumn is another great time to visit. The mountains take on a warm, golden hue, and the cooler temperatures make hiking more pleasant. October is particularly popular due to the National Day holiday, so it’s wise to plan ahead to avoid overcrowded areas.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter brings a unique charm to Zhangjiajie with its snow – covered peaks, creating a dramatic and serene view. While some areas might close due to snow, you’ll encounter fewer tourists, allowing for a more peaceful experience.

Accommodation

Zhangjiajie offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference:
  • Luxury Resorts: If you’re looking for a luxurious experience, resorts like Zhangjiajie 梓山漫居 (国家森林公园中门店) provide a high – end stay with excellent facilities. Surrounded by nature, they offer a peaceful and relaxing environment.
  • Scenic – view Hotels: Many hotels near the scenic areas, such as those in Wulingyuan, offer beautiful views of the mountains or forests. For example, 回家的孩子・涧外栖境民宿 (张家界国家森林公园店) has a panoramic terrace where you can enjoy the stunning scenery.
  • Budget Accommodation: There are also plenty of budget hotels, guesthouses, and hostels available, such as some of the inns near the train stations or in the city center. These provide clean and comfortable accommodation at a more affordable price.

Transportation within the City

The city has a well – developed transportation network. Highways extend in all directions, and a superhighway connects Zhangjiajie with Changsha. New roads have been built to connect the city center to various scenic areas, making it convenient to travel by car. Inside the scenic areas, there are environmental – friendly buses that shuttle tourists between different attractions. In addition, there are cable cars, elevators (such as the Bailong Elevator), and small trains (like in the 十里画廊) that help you get around more easily while enjoying the scenery.
